MEDIA ADVISORY
Planned Electrical Maintenance at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant
The Department of Watershed Management (DWM) will perform planned electrical maintenance at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The purpose of this work is to complete necessary repairs to existing emergency generators. This work will result in the temporary isolation of the Westside Flow at the Hemphill Electric Pumping Station (HEPS). The Eastside Flow at the HEPS will not be affected. DWM will take appropriate measures to ensure that the distribution system is not impacted. No impact to water service is expected while the planned electrical work is being conducted. This is the first of several partial shutdowns required over the next two months necessary to complete repairs and upgrades to the on-site back-up generator system.
Tuesday’s planned electrical work will consist of the following:
1. Isolate one of two 4,160-volt outdoor switchgear sections by removing the power and making it safe for personnel to work.
2. Install temporary load banks, which will allow 10 back-up generators to be fully tested over a 4-6 week period without any negative impact to the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant electrical system.
3. Perform cleaning and maintenance of a portion of the outdoor switchgear that is being temporarily removed from service.
4. Make the switchgear and temporary load bank area safe for the duration of the generator testing and restore normal power following the 8 hour shutdown.
