Chastain Park

Project Overview
Chastain Park, one of Atlanta’s largest parks with a golf course, walking trails, art center and other amenities, is located in the north portion of the City within the Nancy Creek Watershed. The project site is east of the Chastain Park Amphitheater and southeast of the parking lots at Chastain Memorial Parkway and Powers Ferry Road.

Stormwater from the southern parking lot and half of the northern parking lot is collected by existing infrastructure and flows south. The stormwater flow is joined by runoff from a portion of Chastain Memorial Parkway, and the combined flows enter a depressed grassy area surrounded by walking paths. This area provides some level of passive treatment, but no stormwater control measures are currently in place. Stormwater drains from this area southward into the adjacent Hamburger Pond, which is also surrounded by walking paths and is located near the Galloway School.

Project Scope and Benefits
Green infrastructure (GI) will be used to maximize infiltration and storage upstream of Hamburg pond. This includes conveying stormwater runoff via bioretention and a bioswale that uses vegetation to retain and treat the water. When completed, the GI improvements will maximize stormwater treatment while seamlessly integrating with the parks features and amenities, and improving water quality while protecting the City’s infrastructure.
