West Manor Park
Green Infrastructure Design Challenge
Project Overview
West Manor Park, located near Young Middle School on Benjamin E. Mays Drive, serves City of Atlanta residents in the surrounding community. Amenities at the park include athletic facilities, playground, picnic areas, and greenspace, which can be used for outdoor play or other recreational activities. The West Manor Park Community Center hosts after-school programs and other events, making it a nexus of activity for the community.
The purpose of this green infrastructure (GI) project is to address flooding in the community while creating an aesthetic project that integrates the park amenities and improves the water quality while protecting City infrastructure.
Winning Team
The GI Design Challenge for West Manor Park called for a unique team comprised of design professionals, a student, and community member. The team requested input from impacted residents and neighborhood groups, and the feedback was instrumental in the winning design for West Manor Park. Team members are:
- River 2 Tap, Inc. (R2T)
- Hedstrom Design LLC
- Hazen and Sawyer
- Accura Engineering and Consulting Services, Inc.
- Corporate Environmental Risk Management, LLC
- Southeastern Engineering, Inc.
- Bradley Hines – Student representative – Georgia State University
- Michelle Flowers – Community representative
The team’s innovative design solution begins with a suite of green infrastructure features to be developed within West Manor Park. The main features include enhanced dry swales near the baseball field and between the parking area and Lynhurst Drive residential properties. In addition, stormwater planters are planned along West Manor Drive and bioretention ponds near the playground and at the corner of West Manor Circle and Benjamin E. Mays Drive.
The bioretention pond, enhanced dry swales, and stormwater planters will use native plants to enhance the stormwater quality for wildlife. This approach will reduce maintenance costs and provide protection from water borne pathogens for the residents of the West Manor Circle and the Lynhurst Drive residential areas.
