DWM Upgrades Electrical System at Hemphill Pump Station to Strengthen
Water Reliability

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) will conduct planned electrical maintenance at the Hemphill Pump Station beginning on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. This work includes the replacement of the existing Utility Switchgear (USG-1), a critical component that serves as the backbone of the facility’s electrical distribution system.

During the maintenance period, DWM is taking extra precautions to ensure all water treatment processes and pumps remain operational. While the facility’s normal level of electrical redundancy will be temporarily reduced, the City is coordinating closely with Georgia Power and utilizing onsite backup generators to ensure that at least one redundant power source remains available throughout the project.

This investment reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure and delivering reliable, clean, and safe drinking water to more than 1.2 million people every day – supporting Atlanta’s vision as A City Built for the Future.
