City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management Crews Respond to
Sinkhole on Georgia Avenue SE

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) Crews responded to reports of a sinkhole on Georgia Avenue SE between Connally Street SE and Ami Street SE on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

Upon arrival, DWM field inspection indicated the sinkhole was associated with a 24-inch clay combination sewer pipe at an approximate depth of 18 feet. DWM crews have exposed the pipe to assess the extent of damage and are currently making repairs. Following completion of the repair, street restoration will be necessary to address the void created by the cave-in.

Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) continues to assist with traffic control, including barricades and signage, to ensure public safety and maintain roadway control.

Residents and businesses within the work zone will continue to have access to their homes, mail and package delivery, emergency services, and trash collection. Motorists are urged to use caution, follow detours, and avoid the area if possible.

Detours: Motorists traveling East on Georgia Ave SE: Turn right onto Martin St SE, turn left onto Little St SE, turn left onto Grant Terrace St SE, and turn right onto Georgia Ave SE to continue eastbound.

Motorists traveling West on Georgia Ave SE: Turn right onto Georgia Terrace SE, turn left onto Cherokee Pl SE, turn right onto Connally St SE, turn left onto Crumley St SE, turn left onto Martin St SE, and turn right onto Georgia Ave SE to continue westbound.

Additional updates will be provided as the situation progresses.
