State of Georgia Issues Level 1 Drought Declaration
Residents & Businesses Encouraged to Practice Water Conservation

ATLANTA – The State of Georgia has declared a Level 1 Drought Response for parts of the state, including metro Atlanta, because of continued dry weather and low rainfall.

A Level 1 drought declaration is the earliest stage of the state’s drought response plan and serves as a proactive measure to encourage voluntary water conservation before conditions worsen. Under a Level 1 Drought Response, the Department of Watershed Management (DWM) encourages residents and businesses to adopt simple, voluntary conservation practices, including:

  • Limiting outdoor watering, particularly during peak daytime hours
  • Repairing leaks and dripping faucets promptly
  • Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads
  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving

“While there are currently no mandatory water use restrictions, this declaration is an important reminder that we all play a role in protecting our most vital resource – water,” said DWM Commissioner Greg Eyerly. “By making small changes now, we can help preserve our water supply and reduce the likelihood of more severe restrictions in the future.”

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division continuously monitors water levels, stream flows, and weather conditions to assess drought status statewide. Local utilities, including DWM, are working closely with state partners to ensure reliable water service while promoting responsible water use. Despite the dry conditions, Atlanta’s drinking water remains safe, reliable, and continues to meet or exceed all federal and state water quality standards.
