Georgia EPD Confirms South River Water Reclamation Center Chemical Spill
Did Not Cause Fish Kill
ATLANTA – The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has confirmed that the recent chemical spill at the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management’s South River Water Reclamation Center (WRC) did not cause the reported fish kill in the South River.
During the initial stages of the investigation, preliminary findings indicated that a limited amount of material may have entered one or more of the facility’s six storm drains. In response, DWM crews immediately implemented containment measures, deployed hazardous materials response personnel, and successfully contained and neutralized the spill.
As part of the investigation, DWM collected water quality samples at multiple locations upstream and downstream of the facility. Based on those sampling results and the Georgia EPD’s investigation, the agency has determined that the fish kill was not related to the incident at the South River Water Reclamation Center.
